On his first day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “transform” New York City, promising “a different age” and an ambitious beginning to his tenure.

An Unprecedented Leader

The young democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

Ignoring suggestions to lower expectations, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will rule expansively and audaciously.”

Mamdani openly embraced his political ideology. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not abandon my ideals for fear of being called radical,” he said to rapturous applause.

The swearing-in was a dual event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's ascent as a victory over the status quo.

A Costly Policy Agenda

Mamdani now faces one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a plan promising:

• Free childcare
• No-cost bus transit
• A cap on rents for approximately 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion cost of these programs may be challenging to fund. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the wealthiest New Yorkers and corporations. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating External Dynamics

The new mayor will deal with apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past comments regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a appointments director stepped down over offensive past tweets.

Mamdani has sought to smooth over these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was described as unexpectedly productive.

The Basic Tests of Leadership

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's anti-crime efforts, citing historically low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky warning about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”
